Magnesian - Information

About

A number of caves, mostly of archaeological importance, occur in the Magnesian Limestone of East Derbyshire. Creswell Gorge and its caves are now a National Nature Reserve. The caves are gated and locked, and guided public visits are run at weekends from the Creswell Crags Visitor Centre (at the east end of the gorge) which has displays of archaeological material from the caves. Important prehistoric cave art was found in Church Hole Cave at Creswell in 2003 and 2004. Access to the Herne Hill Caves at Maltby is now controlled by DCA, and for this reason they are included here.
