Brightside Mine

Entrance of Brightside Mine

Access

location_off Lost

At the top of the (public access) track from Hassop Avenue, west of Backdale Quarry and level with the base of Hassop Common. Old mine site with very impressive 'Newcastle Road' arched adit entrance, originally leading to White Coe Mine to the west, but now totally blocked by collapse after 20m. Three rare and intact drystone ore bins or 'bouse teems' are also present. Engine shaft was deemed unsafe and is now permanently covered by a large concrete slab - no access.

Brightside Cottage, the former mine office, is a Scheduled Monument, and is both residential and occupied - please do not disturb the owners.
