Knotlow Cavern, Chapel Dale Engine Shaft

Entrance of Knotlow Cavern, Chapel Dale Engine Shaft

Access

build Derbyshire Key required.

No prior permission required. Parking & changing as for Hillocks Mine. From barn take public footpath NE into field containing obvious overgrown mounds. Large adjustable spanner needed to undo & secure lids. (Emergency spanners kept at the pub in Monyash must be returned same day). Beware polluted water and bad air - this system is notorious for both, and trips may have to be curtailed. Heed any warning notices posted. All visitors are requested to fill in pollution survey book on way out, even if no pollution encountered. Do not leave the lids to any shafts open when not attended because livestock and the public will be at risk.
